I’m working at home. You are, too, right? Get any telemarketer calls?
The other day, 720 513 8184 called me. It showed as a Denver number. I didn’t recognize it. But, because DH was out and about, I answered it.
There was that pause with the hum of background activity on the line. The telltale sign of a telemarketer. Then the caller came on speaking so quickly, I couldn’t understand. So I mimicked him with my own nonsense noises, “Bluhbluhdee bluh bluh.” My proudest, most mature moment? Nope.
Another pause. Then I heard, sort of in the background, but not really,
“You are an asshole.”
In my mind, I have this picture of a call center, with the telemarketers dialing away. Maybe some of them are buddies with the guy in the cubicle next to them. They joke around. They call each other assholes. Just like at my workplace.
It made me smile to catch this private moment between two telemarketing buddies. But just to check, I asked my conversation partner,
Did you just call me an asshole?
He said, very clearly this time, and very clearly speaking to me,
Yes. Because you are acting like an asshole.
I was…shocked, but also kind of impressed. I consider myself blunt and not afraid to say the things that need to be said. But 720 513 8184 was taking it to a new level.
Incredulous, I asked, “Do you work for a telemarketing company?”
He asked me, “Do you work for an asshole company?”
He’s doubling down! I happily admitted defeat in the contest of “biggest asshole on the line.” Click. Block.
